What does the Bible say about counseling?
In the book of Proverbs we are reminded repeatedly that a wise person seeks out counsel. However, many are under the misconception that counseling is only for those who can’t figure it out on their own. But God’s word tells us: “The discerning get advice,” “in an abundance of counselors there is safety,” “without counsel plans fail,” and “victory comes with many counselors.” God created us to minister to one another in the body of Christ, and called some of us specifically to the vocation of Christian counseling. At New Hope Counseling, we feel honored and humbled to walk alongside couples, families, individuals, and children who courageously seek out guidance, encouragement, comfort, healing, and refreshment through professional Christian counseling.
At times we may all feel discouraged, confused, hurt, and lost. Elijah was a prophet who witnessed great miracles and was used in powerful ways by God, but he also experienced times when he was discouraged, depressed, and suicidal. Moses was called by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and yet at times he felt afraid and overwhelmed. Joseph was abused and almost murdered by his siblings and yet God worked in his life and elevated him to be second in command of all of Egypt. Martha was a worrier, a workaholic, and deeply grieved at the death of her brother and yet she had the honor of welcoming Jesus into her home. God can heal, restore, and use anyone!
None of us are exempt from pain, suffering, our own mistakes, or the mistakes of others. However, God reaches out to us through the love and compassion of others, and desires to bring us comfort and hope. God can use Christian counseling to impart His healing power, guidance, restoration, and reconciliation.
