A Peek into a Divinely Inspired Diary.
The Psalms are like getting a glimpse into someone's journal or diary. They provide a wonderful template for sharing our struggles, gratitude, needs, and emotions with God.
King David shared: "I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears; I drench my couch with my weeping. My eye wastes away because of grief; it grows weak because of all my foes. Depart from me, all you workers of evil, for the LORD has heard the sound of my weeping. The LORD has heard my plea; the LORD accepts my prayer.” Psalm 6:6-9
The Psalmists model for us the freedom to be vulnerable and share our heartache and sorrow with the Lord.
The Psalmists also lead us in daring to be honest with God about our frustrations:
Psalm 44:23-26:
"Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord?
Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever!
Why do you hide your face?
Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?
For our soul is bowed down to the dust;
our belly clings to the ground.
Rise up; come to our help!
Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!"
The Psalms also remind us to share our joy and laughter with the Lord:
Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. For the Lord Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth. He subdued nations under us, peoples under our feet. – Psalm 47:1-3
My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to you— I whom you have delivered. – Psalm 71:23
God welcomes us to share all our emotions with Him. He is big enough to handle the wide range of our emotions. Use the Psalms as your guide and cry out to the Lord with all that is in your heart!
